Since its formation in Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes, France) in 1999, M83 has blended electro, ambient and dream pop sounds with a rock universe akin to shoegazing. Led by Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau, M83 made a name for themselves in 2003 with their album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts (No. 116 in France). After Nicolas Fromageau's departure, Anthony Gonzalez continued on his own, releasing Saturdays = Youth (No. 173) in 2008. In 2011, the double album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming! (No. 38 in France and No. 15 in the U.S.) is driven by the track "Midnight City", which reached No. 8 in France and No. 72 in the U.S. M83 takes part in the soundtrack to the film Oblivion (2013), and three years later releases Junk, a new album recorded in the USA. It reaches No. 26 in both France and the United States. DSVII is released in 2019 and reaches No. 98 in France. In early 2023, the duo released the single "Oceans Niagara", the precursor to the album Fantasy, which reached No. 58. From Los Angeles, where he has settled, the musician from Antibes has produced other film soundtracks, for Knife+Heart in 2019 and A Necessary Escape in 2025.
