Lo-Key?

Lo-Key? is an American R&B, funk and new jack swing band formed in the late 1980s, hailing from Kansas City (Missouri) and Minneapolis (Minnesota). The group's main members were Darron "D" Story, Andre "Dre" Shepard, Tyrone "T-Bone" Yarbrough, Lance Alexander and Tony "Prof-T" Tolbert. Lo-Key? was one of the first groups signed to Perspective Records, founded by producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. In 1992, the group scored a national hit with the single "I Got a Thang 4 Ya!", which reached #9 on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart and #27 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song becomes their biggest hit and an R&B classic of the 1990s. Their album Where Dey At? released the same year, also contained the single "Sweet on U", which received moderate radio airplay (#91 on the Billboard Hot 100). Lo-Key?'s sound blends the danceable, synthetic elements of new jack swing with touches of funk, midtempo grooves and soulful vocal harmonies. In addition to their careers as artists, some members, notably Lance Alexander and Prof-T, have also worked as producers for other R&B artists on the Perspective label. Despite their relatively short-lived success, Lo-Key? remained a cult group on the urban R&B scene of the early '90s, appreciated for their sophisticated production and period-appropriate sounds.
