Lo Fidelity Allstars

Lo Fidelity Allstars were formed in Leeds in 1996 by a collective of musicians from Northern England, including Phil Ward, Andy Dickinson, Martin Whiteman, Del Vegas, Johnny Machin, and Dale Maloney, who later relocated to London and then Brighton, signing with Skint Records. Their debut Disco Machine Gun (EP, 1997) introduced a genre‑crossing sound that blended big beat, house, trip hop, and drum and bass, featuring lo‑fi production and distinctive funk bass lines. The 1998 album How to Operate with a Blown Mind expanded their reach, with tracks such as "Bootsy Call" and "Many Tentacles Pimping on the Keys" gaining attention on the club circuit. In 2002 the group released Don't Be Afraid of Love, collaborating with guest vocalists including Bootsy Collins, and later issued the compilation Warming Up the Brain Farm: The Best of in 2007. After a four‑year hiatus, the band returned with the single "Smash & Grab World" in 2009, followed by the album Northern Stomp, which received a four‑star review from DJ Magazine and praise from Q magazine for its dance‑tinged hybrid style. Throughout their career, Lo Fidelity Allstars maintained a presence on international club tours, contributed to various compilations, and remained active under different pseudonyms, solidifying their place in the late‑1990s and early‑2000s electronic music landscape.
