Larry Darnell, born Leo Edward Donald Jr., on December 17, 1928 in Columbus, Ohio, was a singer. He began his singing career after performing with the Brownskin Models dance troupe and settling in New Orleans to sing at the Dew Drop Inn. In 1949, Fred Mendelsohn signed Darnell to Regal Records, where his first two singles "I'll Get Along Somehow" and "For You My Love" entered the U.S. charts in November 1949. The latter single held the Number 1 spot for eight weeks. After Regal Records folded in 1951, Darnell's chart success declined. Known as "Mr. Heart & Soul," he appeared in the film Harlem Rock & Roll Revue (1955) and continued recording through the late 1960s. His final recordings were made for Instant Records in New Orleans in 1969. Darnell passed away on July 3, 1983, following a battle with lung cancer.
