Klaus Doldinger

Klaus Erich Dieter Doldinger, known professionally as Klaus Doldinger, was born on May 12, 1936, in Berlin, Germany. He was a saxophonist and composer who began his musical journey at the age of 10, studying at a conservatory in Düsseldorf from 1947 to 1957. During this period, he performed with groups such as The Feetwarmers and Oscar's Trio starting in 1953. Doldinger made his first tour to the United States in 1960 and formed the Klaus Doldinger Quartett in 1962. His early work included composing for advertising, theater, and cinema, with his first film score being Negresco in 1968. In 1970, he wrote the theme music for the German television series Tatort. Doldinger founded the jazz group Passport in 1971, releasing 28 studio albums with them over the years until 2020. His international breakthrough came with the score for the war film Das Boot (The Boat) in 1981 and the fantasy film Die Unendliche Geschichte (The NeverEnding Story) in 1984. Doldinger continued to release albums, including Shirokko in The First 50 Years of Passport (2021) and "Tatort" (2021), until his death on October 16, 2025, at the age of 89 in Icking, Bavaria.
