Klaatu, a Canadian progressive rock band, was formed in 1973 by John Woloschuk and Dee Long. The duo initially released two non-charting singles, "Anus of Uranus/Sub-Rosa Subway" and "Dr. Marvello/For You Girl", before adding drummer Terry Draper to the lineup. Their early releases included "California Jam", which peaked at number 36 on the Canadian Top 40 in 1974, and "True Life Hero". In 1975, Klaatu signed with Capitol Records in the United States. Their debut album 3:47 E.S.T. was released in September 1976, featuring a Beatles-esque sound that sparked rumors of being a secret Beatles reunion. The album included the minor hit "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft", which was later covered by the Carpenters and became a Top 40 hit worldwide. Klaatu's second album Hope, released in 1977, featured orchestral contributions from the London Symphony Orchestra. Their third album, Sir Army Suit, included the track "Silly Boys", which contained backwards-masked lyrics from their single "Anus of Uranus". The band disbanded in 1982 after releasing two more albums, Endangered Species and Magentalane.
