Kingston Rudieska, a groundbreaking nine-piece South Korean ska band, was formed in 2004 by trombonist Choi Chul-wook. Drawing heavily from first-wave Jamaican ska and Caribbean genres like reggae and calypso, the band is heavily influenced by The Skatalites, frequently performing their covers. Kingston Rudieska’s sound integrates jazz elements, showcasing solos from members, many of whom are seasoned jazz musicians. Known for their energetic performances, they have become a staple in Korea’s music scene, playing at major festivals such as Jisan Valley Rock Festival, Pentaport Rock Festival, and Busan Rock Festival. In 2007, Kingston Rudieska released their debut album Skafiction, which helped solidify their reputation as Korea’s leading ska band. Their discography has since expanded to include Ska Bless You (2010), 3rd Kind (2012), and Everyday People (2014), with the latter produced by former Aggrolites member Brian Dixon. Members include Choi Chul-wook (trombone), Lee Suk-Yul (vocals, percussion), Kim Jeong-Kun (trumpet), Sung Nock-Won (tenor sax), Seo Jae-Ha (guitar), Yim Chae-Sun (keyboards), and Hwang Yona (drums). The band has also collaborated with international artists like Dr. Ring-Ding, furthering their presence in the global ska community while contributing to local Korean reggae and ska culture through projects like the Seoul Riddim Superclub.
