American singer, beatboxer, rapper, producer and cellist Kevin Olusola was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, on October 5, 1988. The son of a Nigerian father and a Grenadian mother, he was educated at a Montessori school and then at Philips Academy Andover, Massachusetts. As a child, he learned to play several instruments, including piano, cello and saxophone, and played in jazz orchestras while continuing his studies at Yale. A member of the Kentucky State Youth Orchestra, he lived in China for a while before studying at Boston's Berklee College of Music, where he recorded the track "Julie-O", combining beatboxing and cello. In 2011, he met the members of Pentatonix on the Sing-Off show, and enjoyed success as a band after signing with Sony Music. The group went on to record multiple albums when, in 2015, Olusola launched his own career with The Renegade EP, which debuted at #1 on Billboard's Classical Albums chart. Still a member of Pentatonix, he took advantage of a break in the band's schedule to record his debut album Dawn of a Misfit (2025), combining vocals, rap, beatboxing and cello.
