Kermit Ruffins & The Barbecue Swingers

Kermit Ruffins, born December 19, 1964, in New Orleans, Louisiana, is an American jazz trumpeter, singer, and composer. He began playing trumpet in eighth grade and co-founded the Rebirth Brass Band in 1983 while still in high school. The band gained popularity by busking around the French Quarter. In 1992, Ruffins formed Kermit Ruffins & The Barbecue Swingers, a traditional jazz quintet known for their weekly performances at Vaughan's Bar. Their album The Barbecue Swingers Live was released in 1998. In 2003, the band received a nomination for Best Traditional Jazz Band or Performer at the Big Easy Entertainment Awards. Ruffins' work extends beyond music; he appeared in the documentary film Make It Funky! (2005) and HBO's television series Treme (2010).
