Keiichi Sokabe is one of Japanâs most influential independent singer-songwriters, celebrated for his poetic songwriting, warm vocal style, and enduring impact on the countryâs alternative music scene. Born in Kagawa Prefecture in 1971, Sokabe first rose to prominence in the early 1990s as the vocalist and guitarist of Sunny Day Service, a pioneering group that helped redefine Japanese folk and rock music for a new generation. Their acclaimed debut album Wakamonotachi (1995) blended the spirit of 1970s Japanese folk-rock with contemporary sensibilities, establishing the band as a landmark act in Japanese indie music. Following the bandâs initial breakup in 2000, Sokabe launched a successful solo career with the single âGuitar,â while continuing to expand his creative activities as a producer, composer, writer, actor, film music creator, and label owner. In 2004, he founded the independent label ROSE RECORDS, becoming a leading figure in Japanâs DIY music culture and championing artistic freedom across multiple disciplines. Over the course of his career, Sokabe has released an extensive catalog of solo and collaborative works while maintaining a reputation for constant artistic exploration. His music seamlessly moves between folk, rock, pop, ambient, and experimental sounds, always anchored by deeply human storytelling. His release âYasashisa Ni Tsutsumaretanaraâ(2026), a heartfelt interpretation of the beloved Studio Ghibli classic, highlights his gift for bringing warmth, intimacy, and emotional depth to timeless songs, further demonstrating the enduring appeal of his artistry.
