Julianna Barwick

Ambient musician, singer, and composer Julianna Barwick was born in Louisiana in 1984. She is one of the most influential figures in ambient and avant‑vocal music. Through her innovative looping techniques, her reverent yet bold compositional voice, and her collaborative openness, she has reshaped what contemporary vocal music can be—offering soundscapes that feel at once like ancient hymns and futuristic meditations. Influenced by singing with a church choir while growing up in Louisiana, she experimented with different sounds and loops, finally finding her own unique sound. Julianna Barwick released her debut EP, Sanguine, in 2006, which was a collection of wordless vocal pieces constructed from overdubs and spontaneous improvisation. Three years later, she issued her second EP, Florine (2009), which continued her experimental approach to music while also introducing new elements to her minimalist – yet emotional - sound. She released her debut album, The Magic Place, in 2011. The album brought her to prominence in the new age, ambient and experimental music scenes and reached number 4 on Billboard’s New Age Albums chart. Her success continued with the release of Nepenthe (2013) and Will (2016), both of which reached number 3 on the same chart. Six years after the release of her fourth album, Healing Is a Miracle (2020), Julianna Barwick released Tragic Magic (2026), a collaboration with ambient/experimental harpist Mary Lattimore.
