John Paul Cooper, born in the Manchester suburb of Middleton on November 1, 1983, took an interest in grunge in his youth, playing guitar and forming a rock band at college. His discovery of soul music led him to change his style. He sang in a choir, performed in bars and wrote his first songs. In 2012, he launched his career with the release of three EPs available for download. He caught the public's attention with his participation in Jonas Blue's "Perfect Strangers ", which reached #2 in the UK in 2016. That year saw the release of his debut album Raised Under Grey Skies, which reached No. 9 in the UK, and enjoyed great success with the original track "September Song" (No. 7), which toured the European charts. Six other tracks are released separately, including "Passport Home", "She's on My Mind" and the duet "Momma's Prayers" with rapper Stormzy. He also collaborated with Friction on the track "Dancing" (2018), then Norwegian singer Astrid S on her hit "Sing It with Me" (2019). As the 2020s progress, JP Cooper achieves further success, particularly in Asia, where the tracks "Talking to Strangers", "Nothing Ever Changes" and "Sad Song", the latter with Gabrielle, reach South Korea's Top 500 Melon Overseas. In 2026, four years after She, JP Cooper released the album Just a Few Folk, which reached No. 28 in the UK physical sales charts.
