Jimmy Carpenter

Blues saxophonist Jimmy Carpenter hails from Greensboro, North Carolina. He learned to play the saxophone while still in high school, and decided to embark on a musical career in the early 1970s. Drawn to blues and soul after jazz training, he played in local bands such as The Little Alfred Band, The Alka-Phonics and The Believers, of which he was a member for eight years in Charlottesville, Virginia. Hired by guitarist Jimmy Thackery for his band The Drivers in the late 1990s, Jimmy Carpenter accompanied him for six years and took part in the sessions for several albums released in the 2000s. Settling in New York in 2004, he played for well-known soloists such as Tab Benoit and Eric Lindell, before recording his first self-produced album, Tolling in Obscurity (2008). He continued in his role as accompanist with Mike Zito, Maria Muldaur and the Honey Island Swamp Band, and produced the albums Walk Away (2014) and Plays the Blues (2017) for Vizztone Records. The saxophonist then signed with Gulf Stream Records to record the albums Soul Doctor (2019), The Louisiana Record (2022) and Just Got Started (2024), alongside collaborations with Billy Iuso, Raphael Wressing and Shanda & the Howlers. The musician won two Blues Music Awards, in 2021 and 2022.
