Melina Mae Cortez Duterte, known professionally as Jay Som, was born on March 25, 1994, in Walnut Creek, California. She is an American singer, guitarist, keyboard player, and bass player who began playing instruments at a young age and started writing music by 12. In November 2015, Duterte published nine demos on Bandcamp titled Untitled, which gained online attention and were later reissued as Turn Into in 2016. Her sophomore album, Everybody Works, was released in March 2017 under Polyvinyl Records and Double Denim Records. The album featured the single "1 Billion Dogs" and received critical acclaim, appearing on numerous Best of 2017 lists from outlets like Pitchfork and NPR. In August 2019, Duterte released her second studio album, Anak Ko. Her fourth full-length, Belong, was released on October 10, 2025. The album produced the album alongside Joao Gonzalez, Mal Hauser, Steph Marziano, and Kyle Pulley features collaborations with artists such as Hayley Williams (Paramore), Jim Adkins (Jimmy Eat World), Mini Trees, and Soft Glas. Notable singles from the album include "Float," "Cards on the Table," "What You Need," and "Past Lives."
