Jacob Young

As the son of an American jazz enthusiast, Jacob Young (born July 14th, 1970 in Lillehammer, Norway) found himself enamoured by the genre from an early age, teaching himself how to play the guitar at just twelve years old. After studying music at university and perfecting his technique with a coveted scholarship in New York, he returned to Norway to begin recording music, releasing his nine-track debut album This Is You in 1995. Exploring contemporary jazz sonics, the project served as his first of two with instrumentalist contemporaries Larry Goldings, Nils Petter Molvær, Per Oddvar Johansen, Terje Gewelt and Bendik Hofseth, with whom he collaborated once again on 1997’s Pieces of Time. After releasing a third solo album, 2001’s Glow, Young forged some pivotal musical alliances while touring with Trygve Seim’s band: he was noticed by Munich jazz label ECM Records, who offered him a record deal, as well as Norwegian singer Karin Krog, who invited him to collaborate on a joint album in 2002 entitled Where Flamingos Fly. In 2003, he was awarded Norway’s coveted Gammleng Award for Jazz. In the ensuing years, he went on to play and record for numerous other acts including the rock-tinged group Interstatic and drummer Manu Katché, later enlisting in the help of Seim once more on his 2014 album Forever Young and reuniting with Katché the same year as a guest on his album Touchstone for Manu. Signing to Oslo Session Recordings in 2017, Young has since gone on to release several more albums including two in 2020: They Say Humans Exist and Chasing Sunsets.
