American indie pop/dream pop trio Ivy formed in 1994. Initially, singer, songwriter, and musician Andy Chase began searching for a musical partner and had placed an advert in 1991. Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Adam Schlesinger responded to the ad and the two began a long-lasting musical partnership. In 1994, they met transplanted French vocalist Dominique Durand. The three shared a love of the same bands – Prefab Sprout, The Smiths, The Go-Betweens, etc. – and they decided to join forces in a musical project. Signing with Seed Records, the trio released the single “Get Enough”, which earned them great press. They followed that up with the EP Lately, which included a cover of Orange Juice’s “I Guess I’m Just a Little Too Sensitive”. Their debut album Realistic was released in February, 1995. While still remaining a member of Ivy, Schlesinger formed the alt-pop band Fountains of Wayne and both bands continued to co-exist for the next 16 years. Ivy’s second album, Apartment Life, was released in 1997 on Atlantic Records. While Schlesinger was busy with Fountains of Wayne, Ivy took a short break but returned with 2000’s Long Distance. Guest Room, their fourth album, was issued in 2002. By 2005, the trio moved over to Nettwerk Records and released their fifth album, In The Clear. It took another six years before their sixth album, All Hours, was released in 2011. In between Ivy album projects, Durand and Chase formed a band called Paco and released one album, This is Where We Live (2004). Chase also recorded three albums under the name Brookville and an album and two EPs using the pseudonym Camera2. Adam Schlesinger worked on various musical projects including FoW, Tinted Windows, and Fever High. He also wrote for various television and movie projects, earning an Emmy Award plus several Oscar, Tony, Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. On April 1, 2020, Adam Schlesinger died of complications from COVID-19.
