Ithamara Koorax, born Ita Mara Jarlicht on April 28, 1965 in Brazil, is a jazz and bossa nova singer. She began her career as a backup singer for commercials and pop stars in Brazil, including Tim Maia and Vicente Viola. Her debut solo album, Luiza - Live In Rio, was released in 1993. Koorax has collaborated with numerous artists such as Ron Carter, Larry Coryell, Elizeth Cardoso, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, John McLaughlin, and Sadao Watanabe. She has been recognized in the DownBeat Readers Polls multiple times, placing third in 2008 and 2009 in the "Female Vocalist" category. Her albums Brazilian Butterfly (2007) and O Grande Amor (2010) received critical acclaim, with the latter being voted one of the best releases of 2011 by DownBeat magazine. Koorax has performed extensively in the USA, Japan, Korea, and many European countries, appearing at various jazz festivals.
