Imany, whose real name is Nadia Mladjao, was born on April 5, 1979 in Martigues in the Bouches-du-Rhône region of France, into a family of Comorian origin. A keen sportswoman, she practiced high jumping at a very high level during her teens, before flying to the United States, where she launched a modeling career at the age of 17. On the other side of the Atlantic, she became interested in music and decided to learn to sing. At the same time, she began writing her own lyrics and returned to France in 2008 to try her luck as a singer under the name Imany (which means "my faith" or "my hope" in Arabic). She began to establish her soul, folk and blues universe with a debut EP entitled Acoustic Sessions in 2010. Her debut album followed a year later. The Shape of a Broken Heart charted in many European countries and reached number 19 in the French charts. In 2016, two years after her contribution to the soundtrack of the film Sous les Jupes des Filles (No. 84), the EP There Were Tears paved the way for the album The Wrong Kind of War, released the same year and earning Imany her highest ranking in the French charts (No. 7). 2017 saw the release of the No Reason No Rhyme EP, followed in 2019 by the Time Only Moves EP. We then had to wait two years for a new album to enrich Imany's discography. Voodoo Cello was released in 2021 and reached number 24 in the French charts. Four years later, Imany released the autobiographical Women Deserve Rage (2025), featuring the title track "When It Comes" and narrations by Rokhaya Diallo, La Chica, Rossy De Palma and Tiffini Hines.
