Imani Winds, a Grammy Award-winning American wind quintet based in New York City, was founded by flutist Valerie Coleman in 1997. The group's name is derived from the Swahili word "Imani," meaning "faith." All members were initially of African-American or Latino ancestry. The quintet released their first CD on a major label, The Classical Underground, in January 2005, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2006. Imani Winds have since released several albums, including Josephine Baker: A Life of le Jazz Hot! (2007) and This Christmas (2008). Their 2023 album Passion for Bach and Coltrane, a multimedia collaboration with poet A. B. Spellman, won the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Classical Compendium. The group has toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, performing with notable jazz musicians including Wayne Shorter and Steve Coleman.
