American singer of Hawaiian origin, William Guy Tongi aka Iam Tongi, was born in Kahuku on September 1, 2004. He grew up in Washington State and learned to play the ukulele, then the guitar. He signed up for the 20th season of American Idol, but didn't make it through the auditions on his first attempt. He tried again the following year, winning the competition in the final on May 21, 2023. After covering James Blunt's song "Monsters" during the auditions, Blunt joined him for a duet in the final. His career, launched with the single "Dreams", continued with his first hit, "I'll Be Seeing You", which reached #3 on the digital charts and #19 on the US rock charts in 2023. The same year, he covered the ABBA hit "The Winner Takes It All" (#19 in the rock charts on platforms), followed by the reggae track "Why Kiki?",#1 in the world music charts, as well as "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride" (2025), from the film Lilo & Stitch.
