Household Troops Band

The Household Troops Band, a brass band associated with the Salvation Army, was formed in 1887 by Staff-Captain Harry Appleby. Its origins trace back to the "Great Kent March" of 1885. The pioneer 25 members embarked on their first tour in June 1887, followed by their first international tour to Canada in October 1888, which inspired the formation of Canada's own Household Troops Band. In 1893, the original Household Troops Band was dissolved to make way for the International Headquarters Staff Band. The band was revived in 1985 by Captain John Mott, selecting members from the "A" Band at the National School of Music, Cobham Hall. Since then, it has conducted annual tours across the UK, primarily during the summer, and releases a CD recording nearly every year. The Household Troops Band is distinguished within the Salvation Army for wearing a pith helmet and is recognized alongside the International Staff Band as one of the UK's prominent Salvation Army bands.
