Formed in 2000 by childhood friends-turned-DJs Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard and three other musicians (Al Doyle, Owen Clarke and Felix Martin), Hot Chip began to make a name for themselves with their rap-, soul- and house-influenced electronic pop on their debut album Coming on Strong (2004), which received critical acclaim but never charted. Confined to their studio, the quintet honed sounds far removed from the performances delivered on every tour, with an occasional sixth member, Rob Smoughton. Signed to James Murphy's label, DFA Records, Hot Chip enjoyed exponential success from The Warning (2006), charted at No. 34 and No. 1 in the UK dance charts, and produced multiple remixes for Gorillaz, Kraftwerk, Amy Winehouse, Queens of the Stone Age and Caribou. In return, the following album Made in the Dark (#4 in 2008), nominated for the Mercury Prize, opened the door to Remade in the Dark remixes. Between the synthetic pop of the 1980s and the electronic experimentation of the 2000s, the albums One Night Stand (No. 11 in 2010), In Our Heads (No. 14 in 2012), Why Make Sense? (No. 13 in 2015) and A Bath Full of Ecstasy (No. 11 in 2019), boosted the band's notoriety, which produced a volume in the LateNightTales series (2020) and recorded a duet with Jarvis Cocker on "Straight to the Morning" the same year. In 2022, the eighth album Freakout/Release is released, ranked No. 16 in the UK (No. 1 in the independent album and dance charts). Three years later, the compilation Joy in Repetition retraced the band's history with all its hits, adding the previously unreleased track "Devotion" .
