Hans-Martin Linde was born on May 24, 1930, in Werne, Germany. He studied flute and conducting at the University of Music in Freiburg from 1947 to 1951. Linde began his career with the Cappella Coloniensis in Cologne, collaborating with August Wenzinger and directing the vocal ensemble of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis starting in 1957. He became known for his virtuosity on both the transverse flute and recorder, specializing in Baroque and Classical periods. Linde founded the Linde-Consort, recording works from the 16th and 17th centuries. Notable albums include Baroque Recorder Concertos (1987) and Concerti Grossi Op. 3 (1990).
