Grupo 5

Grupo 5, founded by brothers Elmer Yaipén Uypan and Víctor Yaipén Uypan on January 31, 1973, in Monsefú, Chiclayo, emerged as a Peruvian cumbia and merengue ensemble that would shape the country’s northern musical landscape. The group’s breakthrough arrived with the 1980 single "No pongas ese disco" and the subsequent album No pongas ese disco, followed by the album Recuérdame in 1981, establishing the band’s early appeal. In 1983 the shift to cumbia was cemented with the album El show internacional del Grupo 5, while the 1984 release Sueño contigo blended cumbia and disco, setting the tone for future releases such as the albums Viva el amor (1995) and Así se goza (2000). The death of founder Elmer Yaipén Uypan in 1999 did not halt the group; instead, Elmer Jr. and Andy joined, and the band released the albums Motor y motivo (2005) and El ritmo de mi corazón (2012), the latter composed by Gian Marco. International tours expanded in the 2000s, including performances in Japan (2008) and the United States (2010), while collaborations with artists like Américo broadened their reach. The 2023 Noche de oro concert at Estadio San Marcos drew over 150 000 attendees, a record for Peruvian cumbia, and the 2024 series of shows at Estadio Nacional cemented Grupo 5’s status as a leading tropical act, with Billboard Peru ranking them at the top of the charts for several weeks. In 2025, the group released the live EP Grupo 5 - Movistar Arena 2025, recorded during their show in Santiago de Chile.
