Gérard Manset

A meticulous artist in the studio but invisible on stage, Gérard Manset was born in Saint-Cloud on August 21, 1945. A self-taught musician, writer-traveler and photographer who has become an extraordinary figure on the French song scene, since 1968 he has been offering songs refined in the greatest secrecy, imbued with poetry and mystery. With complete control over the production of his work, this solitary composer, producer and singer has preferred to keep a low profile, refusing all media coverage, promotion and public appearances, which is why he is appreciated and respected for what he is and nothing else. From Il Voyage en Solitaire (1975) to Manitoba Ne Répond Plus (2008), via Royaume de Siam (1979) and Matrice (1989), Manset has left his mark on generations of French artists. In 2014, he revisits his songs with some of his heirs in Un Oiseau S'est Posé. Two years later, he released a new album, Opération Aphrodite. After reissuing almost all his records in the Mansetlandia box set (19 CDs, 2016), in 2017 he received the Grande médaille de la chanson française, awarded by the Académie française. The following year saw the release of the album Au Bord du Blossom, followed in 2022 by Le Crabe aux Pinces d'Homme and in 2024 by L'Algue Bleue. Released in 2026, his twenty-fifth studio album Je Ne Veux Pas is dominated by the eleven-minute title track.
