The group consisted of African Americans who traveled to perform songs and other elements of Gullah culture. Notable members over time included Bessie Jones, Joe Armstrong, Mable Hillery, and Frankie Sullivan Quimby. Initially known as the Spiritual Singers Society, their music was first recorded in 1935. Notable albums include I'm On My Way (1985), Georgia Sea Islands Songs for Everyday Living (1998), and Join the Band (2011). In 1959-60, Alan Lomax documented their performances, which were later featured at the Newport Folk Festival in 1967 and included in the film Festival. The group also notably performed at President Jimmy Carter's inauguration in 1977.
