Bassist, keyboardist and vocalist with Canadian progressive rock band Rush from 1968 to 2015, Geddy Lee has influenced a large number of musicians. Born Gary Lee Weinrib in North York, Ontario, on July 29, 1953, he learned guitar at the age of fourteen, then drums, trumpet, clarinet and piano, before settling on bass, particularly after listening to Jack Bruce in Cream. A classmate of guitarist Alex Lifeson, he replaced Rush's original bassist, Jeff Jones, and took the name Geddy Lee, becoming the leader of the band that would go on to collect hits at the highest level in his country for four decades. As Rush's main composer and arranger, Lee was also producer for Boys Brigade and accompanist, from I Mother Earth and Big Dirty Band to Broken Social Scene and Yes. He took part in the charity recordings of Northern Lights ("Tears Are Not Enough", 1985) and ArtistsCAN ("Lean on Me", 2020) and recorded a solo hard rock album, My Favourite Heartache, in 2000.
