Garmarna, a Swedish folk-rock band from Sundsvall, was formed in 1990 by Gotte Ringqvist, Stefan Brisland-Ferner, and Rickard Westman. The group gained local popularity and participated in the Umeå Folk Music Festival before performing at the Hultsfred Rock Festival, where they caught the attention of Emma Härdelin, who became their vocalist, and Mats Hammerman from Massproduktion Records. The band released their self-titled debut EP in early 1993. Their album, Guds spelemän, was released in 1996 and won the Best Folk Album Award. The band's international success included tours across Europe, North America, and Asia, as well as notable appearances such as their participation in the Melodifestivalen 1997 with the song "En gång ska han gråta".
