Galaxie 500

Galaxie 500, an American rock band from Cambridge (Massachusetts), was formed in 1987 by singer/guitarist Dean Wareham, drummer Damon Krukowski, and bassist/singer Naomi Yang. The trio met at the Dalton School of New York in 1981 but began rehearsing together during their time at Harvard University. Their debut single "Tugboat" was released in February 1988, followed by their first album Today later that year on the independent label Aurora. In 1989, they signed with Rough Trade and released their second album On Fire, which reached Number seven on the UK Independent Chart. The group disbanded in 1991 after releasing their third album This Is Our Music. Posthumously, Galaxie 500's work has been recognized for its influence on independent music, with notable posthumous releases including a compilation best-of titled The Portable Galaxie 500 (1998), and the live recordings Copenhagen (1997), and CBGB 12.13.88 (2025).
