The Gabrieli Consort & Players, a British ensemble specializing in Renaissance and Baroque music on period instruments, was founded by Paul McCreesh in 1982 in Manchester. The group is named after Andrea Gabrieli and his nephew Giovanni, prominent figures in the musical life of 16th-century Venice. Their early success included critical acclaim for their reconstructions of historical musical events, notably the recording, A Venetian Coronation Ceremony 1595 released in 1990. The ensemble's repertoire expanded from Monteverdi and Gabrieli to include works by Handel, Bach, Palestrina, Purcell, and others. Notable recordings include Tomás Luis de Victoria's Officium Defunctorum and the reconstruction of Heinrich Biberâs Missa Salisburgensis. The Gabrieli Consort & Players received numerous awards, such as the Gramophone Award for Early Music in 1993 for Venetian Vespers and the Diapason d'or in 1999 for the reconstruction of Bach's Epiphany Mass. They primarily recorded for Deutsche Grammophonâs Archiv label.
