Gabby Pahinui

Gabby Pahinui was an American Hawaiian musician born as Charles Kapono Kahahawai Jr. on 22 April 1921 in Lahaina, Maui, Territory of Hawaii. He was adopted by Emily and Philip Pahinui and took the name Philip Kunia Pahinui. He achieved professional recognition as a backup guitarist for Charley "Tiny" Brown before beginning a recording career. His recording career began with the track “Hi'ilawe” (1946), followed by the track “Hula Medley” (1947), which was inducted into the National Recording Registry in 2011. Pahinui collaborated with Eddie Kamae in the ensemble Sons of Hawaii, releasing the studio recordings Music of Old Hawai'i (1964) and Folk Music of Hawai'i (1971). In 1972, he established the Gabby Band and released the studio recordings Gabby (1972) and Rabbit Island Music Festival (1973). His discography includes the studio recordings Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band, Vol 1 (1975) and Pure Gabby (1978). Pahinui died on 13 October 1980.
