Freelance Whales

Freelance Whales was an American indie rock, indie folk, and baroque pop ensemble formed in 2008 in Queens, New York. The group consisted of Judah Dadone, Jacob Hyman, Kevin Read, Doris Cellar, and Chuck Criss. The band performed on New York City subway platforms before releasing the debut studio album, Weathervanes, in April 2010 through Frenchkiss and Mom + Pop labels. The recording featured the track “Generator ^ First Floor”, used in Twitter and Chevrolet advertisements, and “Broken Horse”, which appeared in the television series One Tree Hill. The ensemble released the studio album Diluvia in 2012 and toured North America through January 2013. Cellar departed the group in April 2013. The ensemble became inactive following the 2014 release of the recordings “Hyde” and “Will I See You?”. Criss died in 2022.
