Franz Grundheber

Franz Grundheber, born on September 27, 1937, in Trier, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, was a German operatic baritone. After studying at the Max-Planck-Gymnasium and serving in the Luftwaffe, he pursued vocal training at the Hamburg Conservatory, Indiana University with Margaret Harshaw, and the Music Academy of the West. Grundheber debuted at the Hamburgische Staatsoper on October 27, 1966, as one of the six Flemish deputies in Verdi's Don Carlos. He remained a key member until 1988, interpreting approximately 150 roles and participating in ten world premieres. Notable roles included Berg's Wozzeck, Barak in Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten, and Verdi's Simon Boccanegra. Grundheber's international career spanned major opera houses worldwide, including the Wiener Staatsoper, Metropolitan Opera, and Royal Opera House. He was honored with the title Kammersänger in Hamburg in 1986 and became an honorary member of the house in 2006. He passed away on September 27, 2025, in Hamburg.
