Eloy

Eloy is a German progressive rock and art rock ensemble from Hannover established in 1969. They achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by art rock with heavy use of synthesizers and for being one of the most influential bands in the German rock scene during the 1970s. The ensemble was founded by the musician Frank Bornemann and named after the Eloi race from the H.G. Wells novel The Time Machine. They achieved professional recognition for a career that began as a school band and performing their first concert at the venue Freizeitheim Ricklingen on April 29, 1970. Their recording career began with two compositions released on an independent label after winning a talent contest in 1970. Eloy achieved professional recognition for the debut studio recording Eloy (1971) released on the label Philips and signing with the label EMI in 1973. Their discography included the studio recording Inside (1973), the studio recording Floating (1974), and the studio recording Ocean (1977) which reached number 28 in the German charts. The ensemble achieved professional recognition for the studio recording Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes (1979) reaching number 17 in Germany. They achieved professional recognition for a special broadcast on BBC Radio 1 in 1983 featuring four newly recorded tracks including “On the Verge of Darkening Lights” and “Through a Somber Galaxy”. The group became inactive at the end of 1979 and again in 1984 but achieved professional recognition for resuming activity for the studio recording Visionary (2009). Their recording career included the conceptual recordings The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre I (2017) and The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre II (2019). The ensemble achieved professional recognition for the studio recording Echoes from the Past (2023) reaching number 11 in Germany.
