Ego Ella May

Ego Ella May, born Ella May in Croydon, United Kingdom, on 13 March 1992, is a British‑Nigerian soul singer who began performing in her late teens and taught herself guitar, beat‑making, and production at nineteen. Her breakthrough came in 2014 with the EP Breathing Underwater, followed by the EP Zero, both of which received praise from AFROPUNK and SPIN for their blend of soul, jazz, and electronic elements. In 2018 the track "Table for One" was highlighted by The New York Times and featured in the soundtrack for Sex Education. Ego Ella May released the single "Tea & Sympathy" in 2019, and in 2020 issued "Give A Little" and "How Long Til’ We’re Home?", the latter reflecting her dual cultural identity. She signed with John Boyega’s Upper Room Records, releasing the album Honey For Wounds (2020), which earned a 4/5 review from Vinyl Chapters and secured her the Best Jazz Act award at the 2020 MOBO Awards. Subsequent releases include the albums So Far (2019), BY the WAY (2023), FIELDNOTES PT III (2023), and the single "What We Do" (2025). Her work has been featured on COLORS, BBC Four, and the EFG London Jazz Festival, and she has collaborated with artists such as Kay Young and Beau Diako, solidifying her presence in contemporary UK soul.
