Edward W. "Ed" Sarath, born around 1953 in the United States of America, is an American trumpeter and composer known for his contributions to jazz and new improvisational music. He began playing the trumpet at age ten and studied music at Western Connecticut State University and the University of Iowa. In 1987, he joined the University of Michigan as a professor and director of the jazz studies program until 2007. Sarath directed orchestras that performed in New York and collaborated with notable artists. As a composer, he wrote Rites of Passage for the WDR Big Band Köln, premiered in 1998 with Dave Liebman and Michael Brecker, and Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, first performed in 1998. His album releases include Timescape (2000) featuring Karl Berger.
