D'Oyly Carte Opera Company

The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company was a British light opera company, founded by Richard D'Oyly Carte. It achieved its breakthrough with Trial by Jury, a collaboration between W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan that premiered at London's Royalty Theatre in March 1875. The company produced several full-length operas, including The Sorcerer (1877) and H.M.S. Pinafore (1878), and staged Gilbert and Sullivan's Savoy operas regularly in repertory in London and on tour until 1982. Notable seasons and tours continued intermittently from 1988 to 2003, with co-productions with Scottish Opera starting in 2013. The company made significant contributions to preserving and popularizing Gilbert and Sullivan's works, including numerous recordings of the Savoy Operas, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s.
