Douglas Scott Gillard, born Decemberâ¯23, 1965 in Sandusky, Ohio, is an American guitarist, songwriter, and multiâinstrumentalist. He began writing songs at age five and moved to Cleveland after high school, where he worked as a collegeâradio DJ while performing with local punk bands. Doug Gillard rose to prominence as a member of Death of Samantha in the 1980s, then joined John Petkovicâs Cobra Verde in the 1990s; Cobra Verde served as the backing band for Guided by Voices during the Magâ¯Earwhig! era. From 1997 to 2004 he toured and recorded six Guided by Voices LPs and collaborated with Robert Pollard on Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department (1999), Mist King Urth (2003), and Waving at the Astronauts (2011). He released solo projects Malamute Jute (1999), Salamander (2004), Call from Restricted (2008), and Parade On (2014) on Ninth Mile Records, the latter noted for its riffâbased rock. After rejoining Nada Surf in 2012, he continued to perform in New York City and worked on Parallel Stride, released in Aprilâ¯2026.
