DJâ¯Hype was born Kevin Ford in London and emerged as a drum'n'bass DJ and producer. He began his career in the late 1980s, working for pirate radio stations Fantasy FM and Jeb FM before gaining international recognition. In 1993 his single "Shot in the Dark" entered the UK Singles Chart, marking his breakthrough. Over the next few years he released the Still Smokin' compilation (1996) in collaboration with Ganja Records and Frontline. He signed with BMGâs Parousia in 1997 and produced the EP New Frontiers with Ganjaâ¯Kru, which reached Number 56 on the UK Albums Chart. DJâ¯Hype also hosted shows on Kissâ¯100, won Hardcore Awards for Best DJ (1994) and Best Radio Host (1995), and released the 2009 compilation Drum & Bass Essentials on Rhino Records.
