Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen is a German pop band that was founded in Hamburg in 2012. It was formed after the break-up of the band Superpunk, from which singer and guitarist Carsten Friedrichs and bassist Tim Jürgens emerged. The group is initially completed by Christoph Kähler (drums), Gunther Buskies (keyboards) and Philip Morten Andernach (saxophone), later joined by Fabio Papais (guitar) and Heiko Franz (drums), among others. Musically, the band moves between northern soul, pop, punk and garage rock. Typical of their style are ironic and humorous lyrics with a socio-political undertone and a pronounced tendency towards danceability. In October 2012, the debut album Jeder auf Erden ist wunderschön was released on the Tapete Records label. It includes the single "Die Gentlemen Spieler", which is awarded the prize for the best soccer song of the year (2012) by the German Academy for Football Culture. In 2014, the second studio album Alle Ampeln auf Gelb! followed, which was characterized by further developed arrangements and songs such as "Rock-Pop National" - which was named "Song of the Week" by the taz newspaper. Two years later, Rüttel mal am Käfig, die Affen sollen was machen! (2016), which thematically oscillates between consumer criticism and observation of everyday life. With It's OK to Love DLDGG, the band entered the German album charts for the first time in 2017 (number 60). The single "Arbeit ist ein Sechsbuchstabenwort" (Work is a six-letter word) takes a critical look at the relationship to wage labor. The album Fuck Dance, Let's Art! followed in 2019, reaching number 48 in the charts. Songs such as "Der fünfte Four Top" and "Ein trauriges Geräusch" show the band at the height of their stylistic range. In spring 2021, the sixth studio album Gschichterln aus dem Park Café is released, which reaches number 66 in the German charts and quotes and comments on the attitude to life in the 1970s with songs such as "Kennst du Werner Enke?" and "Die traurige Disco". In 2022, the band released the retrospective Alleine auf Partys: 18 gewöhnliche "Hits", which brought together important songs from all phases of their career. Another studio album, Egg Benedict, is released in May 2025. The album reaches number 65 in Germany.
