Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz

The Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz is a German symphony orchestra based in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. It was founded in 1919 in Landau as the Landes-Sinfonie-Orchester für Pfalz und Saarland before being reorganized as the Pfalzorchester in 1923. The ensemble was renamed the Saarpfalzorchester in 1933 and the Landessymphonieorchester Westmark in 1941. After World War II, it performed as the Philharmonisches Orchester der Pfalz until 1974, when the state of Rheinland-Pfalz assumed management and renamed it the Pfälzische Philharmonie, Staatsorchester Rheinland-Pfalz. In 1977, it became one of the first major orchestras to perform under a female conductor, Hortense von Gelmini. Under the leadership of Christoph Eschenbach, it was renamed the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and moved to the Philharmonie in Ludwigshafen in 1985. The orchestra adopted its current name on January 1, 2007. It has received numerous honors, including ECHO Klassik awards in 2014 and 2015 and an Opus Klassik in 2018. Michael Francis began his tenure as chief conductor in 2019.
