David Mitchell Torn, born 26 May 1953 in Amityville, Newâ¯York, is an American guitarist, composer, and producer who blended electronic and acoustic textures through looping and effects. He began in 1970s with Zobo Funn Band, later joining Everyman Band, Jan Garbarekâs quartet, and recording for ECM, Windham Hill, and CMP. David Torn released Bestâ¯Laidâ¯Plans (1985), Cloudâ¯Aboutâ¯Mercury (1987), Doorâ¯X (1990), Gtrâ¯Oblq (1998), Onlyâ¯Sky (2015), and Threeâ¯Movements with Sonar and J. Peter Schwalm (2023). He worked with Davidâ¯Bowie, k.d.â¯lang, Madonna, Johnâ¯Legend scored films The Big Lebowski and The Departed. David Torn earned Grammy nomination for The Order (2003) and Jackson Hole Film Festival Best Score award for Believeâ¯inâ¯Me (2006). A 1990s brainâtumour diagnosis left him deaf in right ear, but he continued to compose and perform. Subsequent releases include Fall to Rise, So Fell to Feel (2024), Finally the Sweetness (2024), and Now I Imagine a Place Not the Same (2026).
