Dan Black

Full name Daniel Edward Emmett Black, born in Lees on November 16, 1975, Dan Black is a British singer, songwriter and producer. He began his musical career in the 1990s as a guitarist in the band Minty, before co-founding Massive Ego. In 1998, he formed The Servant in London, where he became lead singer, guitarist and principal composer. The Servant enjoyed modest but notable success, especially in France, Spain and Switzerland, with two studio albums: The Servant (2004) and How to Destroy a Relationship (2006). After the group split up in 2007, Dan Black embarked on a solo career. In 2008, he attracted attention with the track "HYPNTZ", a mash-up of lyrics by The Notorious B.I.G., David Bowie's "Starman" and a Rihanna loop. The track was quickly withdrawn for rights reasons, but brought him to the attention of The:Hours/Polydor. He then released the singles "Alone" and "Yours", followed by "U + Me =", which became an online hit and was used as the theme song for the BBC series The Cut. His first solo album, ((UN)), was released in July 2009 in the UK and in February 2010 in the US via A&M Records. Produced entirely on his computer in Paris, the album blends pop, electronica, hip-hop and alternative rock. The single "Symphonies", remixed with Kid Cudi, became his best-known track, accompanied by an acclaimed video and nominated twice at the MTV Video Music Awards. Other tracks like "Wonder" are included in popular video games such as FIFA 11 and NBA 2K11. In 2012, Dan Black took part in the soundtrack to a vodka brand advert with the track "Raw", and appeared on the GOOD Music label's Cruel Summer compilation with "Creepers", performed by Kid Cudi. After several years of work and varied collaborations, in 2017 he released the album Do Not Revenge, a project, more introspective and personal that sees him deepen an electronic approach with pop and experimental influences. Alongside his solo career, he collaborates as a songwriter and producer with several artists, including Louane, for whom he co-wrote several tracks on the album Chambre 12, awarded at the Victoires de la Musique awards in 2016. He also works with Planet Funk, for whom he is a regular singer, Kelis, Kaskade and Adam Levine. In 2025, he released "Orchestra (10th Anniversary)", which reached the Top 60 Radio Songs in France.
