Dale Watson was born Kenneth Dale Watson on October 7, 1962, in Birmingham, Alabama. He spent his early years in North Carolina and later moved to Pasadena, Texas, where he started writing songs at 12 and made his first recording in his teens before playing Houston-area clubs with his brother Jim. In 1988 he moved to Los Angeles on Rosie Floresâs advice, joined the house band at the Palomino Club, cut the Curb singles âOne Tear at a Timeâ and âYou Pour It On and I Pour It Down,â and then spent time in Nashville writing for Gary Morrisâs publishing company. After settling in Austin, he formed the Lone Stars and broke through on HighTone with Cheatinâ Heart Attack (1995), followed by Blessed or Damned (1996), I Hate These Songs (1997), and The Truckinâ Sessions (1998), albums that established his hard-country stance and produced calling cards such as âNashville Rash.â A personal turning point came after the 2000 death of his partner Terri Herbert, which shaped the tribute album Every Song I Write Is for You (2001). After a mid-2000s pause and return to Austin, he resumed recording with albums including Whiskey or God, The Sun Sessions, and El Rancho Azul, the 2013 release that brought his signature song âI Lie When I Drink,â a first appearance on Austin City Limits, and added momentum to the Ameripolitan movement he later formalized through the Ameripolitan Music Awards. He remained prolific through Call Me Insane (2015), Dale & Ray with Ray Benson (2017), Call Me Lucky (2019), Dale Watson Presents the Memphians (2021), Jukebox Fury (2022), and Starvation Box (2023), while also appearing in Yellow Rose and reopening Hernandoâs Hide-A-Way in Memphis with Celine Lee. In 2026 he continued that run with Unwanted, released through Forty Below Records.
