Lydia Habtemariam, known first as Chxrry22 and later credited as Chxrry, was born on March 25, 1997, in Scarborough, Toronto, Canada, to Ethiopian immigrant parents. She grew up around church and family singing, began posting vocal covers online in 2017, and later moved to Atlanta to pursue music more seriously. After attracting the attention of Amir âCashâ Esmailian, she signed to XO Records, becoming the first woman on the Weeknd-founded label. Chxrry made her official debut in 2022 with âThe Falls,â then released her first EP, The Other Side, through XO Records and Republic Records the same year, with tracks including âCall Me,â âWasteland,â âAlone,â and âDo It.â In 2023, she followed with âMore,â âWorldâs Away,â and the EP Siren, which featured Vory on âNever Had Thisâ and Offset on âFavorite Girl.â She also opened for the Weeknd during his After Hours Til Dawn tour period, bringing her Toronto-rooted R&B to larger international stages. In 2024, Chxrry released âPoppin Out (Mistakes),â then entered a more direct pop-R&B phase in 2025 with âJust Like Me,â âMain Character,â and âGroupie.â In 2026, she released âHall of Fameâ and âBottles & Lightsâ with Mariah the Scientist ahead of her debut full-length album, U, Me & My Ego, released via XO Records and Republic Records on May 29, 2026.
