Charlie Poole

Charles Cleveland Poole, born on March 22, 1892, in Franklinville, North Carolina, was an American old-time musician and banjo player. He formed the North Carolina Ramblers in 1925 with his brother-in-law Posey Rorer and guitarist Norman Woodlief. The group signed with Columbia Records and released their debut single, "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down Blues" (1925), which sold over 106,000 copies. Throughout the late 1920s, the North Carolina Ramblers recorded over 60 songs, including "Sweet Sunny South" and "White House Blues". Poole's dynamic renditions of traditional folk songs made him a popular figure in the Southeastern United States. Despite his early success, Poole died on May 21, 1931. His music saw a revival in the 1960s, and numerous artists, including John Mellencamp and Joan Baez, have since covered his songs.
