Chambao is a Spanish music project founded in Málaga by MarÃa del Mar RodrÃguez Carnero, known as La Mari, who serves as vocalist and principal songwriter, together with cousins Daniel and Eduardo Casañ. The trio began rehearsing in the Pedregalejo neighborhood in 2001, later collaborating with producer Henrik Takkenberg; their first release, the compilation Flamenco Chill, combined flamenco palos with electronic chillâout elements and achieved commercial success. In 2003, the album Endorfinas en la mente was issued, featuring the single "Ahà estás tú" and earning triple platinum certification in Spain; the record received the Premio Ondas for best musical creation and the Premio de la Música for best new music album. The 2005 release Pokito a poko continued the fusion style, producing the title track that later received a collaboration with Estopa; the album was certified quadruple platinum. Con otro aire (2007) incorporated Arabic and African influences and yielded the socially themed single "Papeles mojados", which was nominated for Best Alternative Song at the 2008 Latin Grammy Awards. Subsequent albums En el fin del mundo (2009), the selfâtitled Chambao (2012), and Nuevo ciclo (2016) expanded the projectâs international reach, with the 2012 album nominated for Best Contemporary Pop Album at the Latin Grammys. After announcing the projectâs dissolution in 2018, La Mari revived Chambao in 2023 with the album En la cresta del ahora, accompanied by a tour across Spain, Latin America, and Europe.
