Carlos Montoya

Carlos Montoya, born on December 13, 1903 in Madrid, Spain, was a guitarist known for his contributions to flamenco music. He started playing guitar at eight, taught by his mother and later Pepe El Bárbaro. By fourteen, he was professionally accompanying dancers and singers. In 1928, Montoya joined Antonia Mercé's company, known as La Argentina, and later worked with Vicente Escudero. His international tours began in 1933 with Teresina's troupe. During World War II, Montoya settled in the U.S., collaborating with Sallie McLean and obtaining American citizenship. He transitioned from traditional flamenco to incorporating jazz, blues, and folk elements. Notable albums include Spanish Guitar Solos (1950) and Flamenco! (1996). Montoya passed away on March 3, 1993 in Wainscott, New York, leaving a lasting impact on flamenco music.
