Butcher Brown

Founded in Richmond, Virginia in 2009 by DJ Harrison (keyboards, producer, engineer), Corey Fonville (drums), Andrew Randazzo (bass), and a cast of revolving musicians, Butcher Brown is an acclaimed progressive jazz funk fusion band. Their sound – influenced by Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever and Weather Report - blends old school jazz funk with modern hip-hop and futuristic jazz funk. The band began composing their songs collectively through improvisational jam sessions, eventually releasing their earliest recordings – Backtracks and A Sides B Sides – in 2013. They followed those releases with All Purpose Music (2014), GrownFolk (cassette-only, 2015), Virginia Noir (2016), and The Healer (2017). Along the way, they added Marcus Tenney (reeds, brass, MC) and Morgan Burrs (guitar) to the line-up, making Butcher Brown a quintet. Their 2018 release Camden Sessions was recorded at producer Mark Ronson’s London studio. The year 2019 saw the release of the EP Afrokuti: A Tribute to Fela. Signing to the Concord Jazz label, Butcher Brown released the album #KingButch (2020), followed by Triple Trey (2022), Solar Music (2023), and Letters from Atlantic (2025).
