Burton Lorne Cummings, born December 31, 1947 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, is a Canadian rock singer, songwriter, and keyboardist who rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of The Guess Who from 1965 to 1975. He joined Chad Allan & The Expressions in 1966, becoming sole lead vocalist when the group adopted the name The Guess Who. The group's debut album under that name was It's Time (1966), and its 1970 single "American Woman" made The Guess Who the first Canadian band to reach Number 1 in the United States. After the group disbanded in 1975, he launched a solo career, winning a Juno Award for Male Vocalist of the Year in 1977 and charting with singles such as "Stand Tall" and "Break It to Them Gently". His solo albums included My Own Way to Rock (1977), Dream of a Child (1978), Woman Love (1980), Up Close and Alone (1997), and A Few Good Moments (2024). He reunited with the group for the live album Together Again! (1983) and performed at the 2003 Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto benefit concert. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2009, inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and received a SOCAN Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
